Two new articles on Risk Engineering and Project Management

Intaver Institute has published two new articles Risk Engineering and How to Process Project Information. Risk management when viewed from a very high level is really about asking three key questions: what could happen, what would be the impact if it did happen, and what can we do about it? Risk engineering is managing risks in such a way that that you can deliver project value with the least amount of risk. Once you understand this key concept, you can then use risk engineering to understand the causes of the risk and the best approach to minimizing its impact on your key project objectives.

The second article "How to Process Project Information" discusses the nature of information, how it is produced and how we interpret it through our own personal motivations and biases. When managing projects we are constantly inundated with complex and often conflicting information. Much of this information is created or delivered in a manner to persuade you to take certain actions. This article goes over some of the methods that are used to manipulate certain well know human cognitive biases and how to recognize them. Further, it outlines strategies that you can use to counteract this flood of information to ensure you have the clear understanding of your project.

Two New Intaver Institute's White Papers

Intaver Institute published two new white paper. The first paper is Behavioral Traps in Project Management. You are driving down a highway, and as usual, you have chosen the fast lane. However, today, it seems to be moving more slowly than usual and when you glance to the side, the adjacent lane appears to be moving faster. After 5 minutes without improvement, you are starting to wonder whether you should switch lanes, but because you have already spent some time what is normally the fast lane, you hope that it will eventually resume its normal pace. Essentially, you have become entrapped. In this paper we will discuss behavioral traps or situations where people become engaged in rational course of actions which later become undesirable.

The second paper is called Memory Errors in Project Management. A lot of the mental mistakes we are prone to in project management are related memory. Often, we cannot properly assess events because we have forgotten similar events that occurred in our past. In this paper we will explore how certain features of our memory can affect project management and how we can improve our memory and hopefully improve our project management.

New webinar: Creating Risk Adjusted Project Plans for Aerospace and Defence Projects

New webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Aerospace and defence project teams are faced with large and complex projects, which present more risk and uncertainty than previously experienced. Project teams are asked to deliver projects on time, budget, and scope and this task is made much more difficult when these targets are not realistic. Project plans that do not actively manage risks and account for uncertainties are unrealistic and therefore unattainable. Creating risk adjusted project plans allows you to create schedules and cost estimates that are resilient with sufficient, yet realistic contingencies that will protect key project objectives.

This webinar will show you how to:

  • - Assess the impact of risk events on key project objectives using quantitative risk analysis
  • - Create risk response plans that reduce the impact of risks
  • - Assign uncertainties to schedule and cost and run Monte Carlo simulations to determine cost and schedule variances due to uncertainties
  • - Build realistic risk adjusted schedule and cost baselines with contingencies and management reserves based upon the analysis of project risk

    New Intaver Institute's White Paper

Intaver Institute published new white paper: Did Oswald Have a Chance to Kill The President? A Project Risk Analysis Perspective. To demonstrate how to use quantitative project risk analysis, we decided to use a well-known historical event, the assignation of U.S. President John Kennedy. We are trying to determine the chance that Oswald could complete his project – the assassination of President Kennedy - as it actually occurred. We do not claim to possess exact information especially with regards to the probabilities and impacts of certain risks; and therefore, cannot give a definite answer from the historical point of view. This example is only intended to illustrate project risk analysis methodology.

New Article: Expected Value in Project Management

Intaver Institute published new article: Expected Value in Project Management. There are so many analytical techniques and tools, some of which are very complex and require a lot of effort to perform and others which are very industry specific. One of the very simple techniques is expected value analysis. This analysis is a choice engineering method, which means that it is more of a mental exercise rather than a strict and formal project management process. At the same time, going through the expected value thinking process may significantly improve quality of decisions.

PMI 2014 Global Congress North America

Intaver recently attended the recent PMI 2014 Global Congress North America in Phoenix, Arizona. Intaver Institute presented RiskyProject software Suite including recently released web-based project risk management software RiskyProject Cloud as well as RiskyProject Professional and Lite version 6.1.

The annual awards dinner was slated to take place on Saturday October 25th had to be hastily relocated when the downtown Sheraton suffered an electrical fire, which meant that we were able to see a well thought out risk management plan unfold. With the Sheraton ballroom unavailable, the organizers quickly put their contingency plan into effect and moved the entire event to the local conference center that was fortunately close by. The event came off on time and without a hitch, the 700 attendees all impressed and no hint of the hasty set up of seating and transfer of hundreds of meals. The highlight for Intaver was the PMI’s David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award recognizes the author(s) of a single publication that significantly advances project management knowledge, concepts, and practice which was presented to authors Dr. Lev Virine and Michael Trumper, for “Project Think: Why good project managers make poor decisions” published by Gower in 2013.

In addition to the awards ceremony, Dr. Virine’s presentation on risk management was well received and had many attendees drop by the booth to express their gratitude for a interesting talk. We would like to thank all of those PMI conference goers who took the time out to visit our exhibit. There was lots of interest and good questions and ideas exchanged over the 2 and a half days. Congratulations to the lucky winner of the draw for a free license of RiskyProject.

New Video: Managing Risk Visibility and Risk Approval in RiskyProject Enterprise

This video covers how the risk approval process is implemented in RiskyProject Enterprise - project and portfolio risk management and risk analysis software. The risk approval process is enabled using risk visibility and user roles. When a user identifies a risk and assigns it to a project, it can be shared with other projects using risk visibility. Risk visibility defines in which sections of the portfolio the risk is available. If a risk is available and can affect a project, the project manager can then assign it to the project with probability and impact as part of the risk assessment process. In this way a risk that is common to multiple projects in the portfolio can be assessed and managed at any level of the portfolio hierarchy. Click here to play the video.

    Book Launch: ProjectThink

The developers of RiskyProject are very happy to announce the upcoming release of their new book "ProjectThink: Why Good Managers Make Poor Project Choices" published by Gower Publishing.

The majority of problems in projects are due to intentional or unintentional human actions. People make poor estimates, forget something, have poor communication, or make other seemingly small mistakes, which conspire together to lead to larger issues.

ProjectThink identifies the paths that lead to trouble. It provides advice and guidance in analysing information and risk, explains how ‘choice-engineering’ can facilitate decision-making and encourage everyone to follow the right procedures and work collaboratively.

To read more about our new book or order a copy, please go to the Gower Publishing website for ProjectThink.
